Why TranquilTouch Exists

There is a particular kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with sleep.

It is the tiredness that comes from a day that asked too much — too many decisions, too many transitions, too much noise. The kind that settles into your shoulders and stays there. What you reach for in those moments matters. Not because a balm can undo a difficult day, but because the act of reaching for something botanical, something slow, something that asks you to pause — that act is its own form of care.

TranquilTouch was developed with that moment in mind. Not as a product designed to perform, but as a formula designed to accompany — to make the quiet moments of a day feel more deliberate and more nourishing.

At Bovanique, every formula begins with two questions before anything else. What is the purpose of this ingredient? And how will it improve the experience for the person using this balm? TranquilTouch has five ingredients. Each one passed that test — not because they are expected botanicals, but because each one contributes something specific to the experience of slowing down.

When I developed TranquilTouch, I wasn’t trying to create a product for a trend. I was trying to create something I would actually reach for at the end of a long day — something that felt genuinely calming rather than simply scented.

The Formulation Philosophy

At Bovanique, we don’t formulate by trend. We formulate by function.

TranquilTouch was designed around a single, clear intention: to create a botanical balm that supports a calming self-care ritual through both its sensory experience and its skin-nourishing properties. The intention behind that design was a formula that felt genuinely soft on the skin, carried a botanical aroma that encouraged stillness, and absorbed cleanly enough to be used as part of an evening routine without heaviness or residue.

Five ingredients. Each one chosen because it contributes to that experience in a specific, complementary way. Nothing is decorative. Nothing is filler.

The Design Goal

The intention was never to simply create a balm, but to create permission to pause.

TranquilTouch was designed for the moments that belong to you — the evening wind-down, the morning mindfulness practice, the quiet pause between one thing and the next. The intention was a balm with a botanical aroma gentle enough to wear close to the skin, a texture that melts and absorbs without effort, and ingredients you could trust because you understood exactly what they were doing.

We weren’t trying to create something complex. We were trying to create something that felt like a genuine invitation to slow down.

Behind Each Ingredient

Lavender-Infused Oil (Lavandula Angustifolia)

The Intention
Lavender was selected with the intention of creating a botanical foundation that would make TranquilTouch feel genuinely calming rather than simply scented. The goal was for lavender to be woven into the formula at its base — present in the oil itself rather than added as a surface note — so that the aroma would be soft, natural and consistent rather than sharp or synthetic. To achieve that, we infuse lavender directly into the carrier oil, a slower process that draws the botanical character of the plant into the formula’s foundation. The intention was that every application of TranquilTouch would carry the full, unhurried quality of the plant — not a concentrated extract, but a gentle, sustained presence.

Lavender has one of the longest histories of any botanical in self-care traditions, valued across cultures for its soft floral aroma and its affinity with moments of rest and quiet. In TranquilTouch, it anchors the formula — providing the botanical character that everything else is built around.

Kokum Butter (Garcinia Indica Seed Butter)

The Intention
Kokum butter was selected with the intention of creating a balm base that felt genuinely luxurious on the skin — soft, silky and non-greasy — while nourishing deeply enough to make TranquilTouch worth reaching for as part of a daily ritual. The goal was a butter that would melt readily on contact with skin, absorb without heaviness, and leave skin feeling genuinely softer rather than simply coated. Kokum butter was chosen over more common alternatives because of its lighter finish and its compatibility with the delicate botanical aroma of the formula — a heavier butter would have competed with the lavender and chamomile rather than supporting them.

Derived from the seeds of the Garcinia indica tree, kokum butter is prized in botanical skincare for its high stearic acid content, which gives it a firm texture in the jar and a beautifully smooth, non-greasy finish on the skin. In TranquilTouch, it plays the central structural role — the ingredient that makes the balm feel as considered as it is.

Chamomile Essential Oil (Matricaria Chamomilla)

The Intention
Chamomile was selected with the intention of deepening and softening the botanical aroma of TranquilTouch — so that the scent felt layered and gentle rather than a single note. The goal was an aromatic companion to lavender that would add warmth and softness without competing for attention: chamomile’s slightly sweet, apple-like quality rounds the floral character of lavender into something more complete and more calming. The intention was that the combined aroma of lavender and chamomile would feel like a botanical environment rather than a fragrance — something you settle into rather than something you notice.

Chamomile has been used in botanical traditions for centuries, valued for its gentle character and its long association with rest and calm. In TranquilTouch, it is the ingredient that makes the aromatic experience feel finished.

Beeswax (Cera Alba)

The Intention
Beeswax was selected with the intention of giving TranquilTouch the consistency of a true traditional balm — firm enough to hold its shape in the jar, soft enough to melt immediately on contact with warm skin. The goal was a texture that activates through touch, creating a small, deliberate ritual in the act of application itself, and that forms a breathable protective layer on the skin to help lock in moisture without blocking the skin from breathing.

It is also why TranquilTouch is not vegan — beeswax is a non-negotiable part of what makes a traditional balm a balm. We are transparent about this because we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re applying to your skin. Beeswax is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in recorded history, and in TranquilTouch it serves the same purpose it has served for centuries: creating a balm that behaves like one.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

The Intention
Vitamin E was selected with the intention of protecting the integrity of the formula over time and conditioning the skin during use — so that TranquilTouch remains as fresh and effective at the end of a jar as it was at the beginning. The goal was an antioxidant that would quietly do two jobs: extend the stability of the lavender-infused oil and the botanical ingredients in the formula, and contribute to the soft, nourished feeling that TranquilTouch leaves on the skin.

It is not a headline ingredient. It is not there to impress. It is there because a well-formulated balm needs it — and because the lavender infusion at the heart of TranquilTouch deserves to be protected. The ingredients that no one notices are often the ones that make everything else last.

Why Five Ingredients

TranquilTouch has one of the shortest ingredient lists in the Bovanique range, and that is not an accident.

The intention behind keeping the formula minimal was to let the lavender and chamomile speak clearly — without competition from unnecessary additions, without complexity that would dilute the simplicity of the experience. Every ingredient in TranquilTouch is there because removing it would make the formula worse. Nothing was added to make the list look more impressive.

A shorter formula is not a simpler formula. It is a more considered one — because every ingredient carries more responsibility when there are fewer of them.

Why This Formula Isn’t Whipped

Whipped balms are popular. They feel light on first touch and have a texture that many people associate with modern skincare.

TranquilTouch is not whipped, and that is a deliberate choice rooted in what we wanted the experience of using it to feel like.

The intention behind choosing a traditional balm consistency was to create a formula that requires a moment of engagement — that melts on contact with skin, that asks you to slow down and massage it in rather than simply applying it quickly. For a balm designed to accompany a calming ritual, that quality felt essential. A whipped formula would have been faster and lighter. A traditional balm is more deliberate — and for TranquilTouch, deliberate was the point.

We returned to the traditional balm because it aligned most closely with the experience we wanted TranquilTouch to create: something that rewards the act of using it, that feels considered in the hand, and that makes the ritual of self-care feel worth taking time over. Why Small Batch Matters

Every jar of TranquilTouch is handcrafted in British Columbia in small batches — and that is a production decision made with the intention of preserving the quality of the lavender infusion at the heart of the formula.

The lavender infusion that anchors TranquilTouch takes time. It cannot be rushed without losing something. Small-batch production is what allows us to give that process the attention it requires — to ensure that the infusion is right before anything else is added, and that every jar reflects the same standard as the one before it.

In large-scale manufacturing, consistency is achieved through automation. In small-batch production, it is achieved through attention. The intention behind staying small is to ensure that the botanical character of TranquilTouch — the quality that makes it feel genuinely calming rather than simply scented — is present in every jar.

It also means that TranquilTouch is made fresh. The lavender infusion is at its most aromatic. The kokum butter is at its most effective. The balm you receive has not been sitting in a warehouse for months. That is what small-batch means to us — and it is why we will not scale beyond what we can make well.

I still reach for TranquilTouch at the end of a long day. Not because I made it, but because it does exactly what I wanted it to do — it makes the act of slowing down feel like something worth doing.
