Essential Oils 101: Understanding Botanical Ingredients in Skincare
If you've ever looked at a natural skincare product and wondered what all those botanical ingredients actually do, you're not alone. Essential oils, carrier oils, infused oils, butters — it can feel overwhelming.
But understanding what goes on your skin empowers you to make informed choices. When you know how botanical ingredients work, you can choose products that truly support your skin's health rather than just masking problems with synthetic chemicals.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that capture the "essence" of a plant — its scent, flavor, and beneficial properties. Most are created through steam distillation. It takes a LOT of plant material to make a small amount: 60 roses = 1 drop of rose essential oil; 220 pounds of lavender = 1 pound of lavender essential oil. This is why pure essential oils are precious — and why they must always be diluted before applying to skin.
Essential Oils vs. Carrier Oils vs. Infused Oils
Essential Oils — Highly concentrated volatile compounds extracted from plants. Always diluted before skin application. Provide aromatherapy, therapeutic properties, and skin support. In Bovanique products: chamomile, lavender, tea tree, frankincense, myrrh, eucalyptus, peppermint, camphor, lemongrass, carrot seed, geranium.
Carrier Oils — Fatty oils pressed from nuts, seeds, or fruits. Used as a base to dilute essential oils and deliver them to skin. Provide nourishment, moisture, vitamins, and fatty acids. In Bovanique products: jojoba, sweet almond, MCT, rosehip.
Infused Oils — Carrier oils that have had plant material steeped in them for weeks to extract beneficial compounds. Gentle extraction without the intensity of essential oils. In Bovanique products: arnica oil, calendula oil, lavender-infused oil, turmeric oil.
All three work together in well-formulated botanical skincare.
How Essential Oils Work in Skincare
1. Topical Absorption
When properly diluted and applied to skin, essential oils penetrate the outer layers and deliver beneficial compounds to tissues below. Tea tree delivers antimicrobial compounds to blemish-prone skin; frankincense delivers boswellic acids that support skin regeneration; peppermint delivers menthol that creates cooling sensation and supports circulation.
2. Aromatherapy
Aromatic molecules travel through your nasal passages to your olfactory system, which connects directly to your brain's limbic system — the area controlling emotions, memory, and stress responses. Lavender signals your nervous system to relax; eucalyptus opens airways; chamomile promotes calm. Scent in skincare isn't just about smelling nice — it's therapeutic.
3. Synergistic Effects
Essential oils work better together than alone. Frankincense + Myrrh (RestoreRelief) enhance each other's anti-inflammatory properties. Lavender + Chamomile (TranquilTouch) create deeper relaxation than either alone. Peppermint + Eucalyptus + Camphor (ArthriEase) create a powerful cooling-warming effect for muscle recovery.
Understanding Concentrations: Why Dilution Matters
- Facial skincare: 1-2% essential oil concentration
- Body products: 2-5% essential oil concentration
- Therapeutic balms: 3-10% (for targeted use)
- Children (6 months+): 0.5-1%
At Bovanique, we formulate at safe, effective concentrations that provide therapeutic benefits without irritation.
The Role of Butters and Waxes
Butters (shea, cocoa, mango, kokum) are solid fats that provide rich nourishing moisture, vitamins, fatty acids, and a protective barrier. Shea is deeply moisturizing for dry skin; mango is lighter and perfect for facial use; kokum is non-comedogenic for blemish-prone skin.
Beeswax creates a breathable protective barrier that locks in therapeutic botanicals while allowing your skin to function naturally. Unlike petroleum jelly (which suffocates skin), beeswax works with your skin. Found in every Bovanique balm.
Quality Matters: Therapeutic-Grade vs. Synthetic
Therapeutic-grade essential oils are pure, unadulterated, properly distilled, and tested for purity. Synthetic or adulterated oils may contain synthetic fragrance compounds, be diluted with cheaper oils, or be mislabeled — and can cause skin irritation without providing therapeutic benefits.
At Bovanique, we use only pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. No synthetic fragrances, no fillers, no shortcuts.

- Sun sensitivity — some oils (especially citrus) increase sun sensitivity; always use SPF
- Pregnancy & children — consult your healthcare provider; gentle oils (lavender, chamomile) are generally safe for children 6 months+
How to Read Ingredient Lists
Ingredients are listed in order of concentration (highest to lowest).
✅ Specific botanical names ("Lavandula angustifolia Essential Oil" not just "fragrance")
✅ Carrier oils listed (jojoba, sweet almond, MCT, rosehip)
✅ Butters and waxes (shea butter, beeswax, mango butter)
✅ No synthetic fragrances — should say "essential oils" not "fragrance" or "parfum"
✅ No parabens, sulfates, or harsh chemicals
❌ "Fragrance" or "Parfum" (synthetic, can cause irritation)
❌ Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben)
❌ Petroleum jelly or mineral oil (occlusive, doesn't nourish)
