Carrier Oils 101: Understanding the Base of Botanical Skincare
When you look at a Bovanique balm ingredient list, you'll see two types of oils: carrier oils (like jojoba, rosehip, sweet almond) and essential oils (like lavender, frankincense, tea tree).
Most people have heard of essential oils. They're popular, well-marketed, and widely discussed. But carrier oils? They're the unsung heroes of botanical skincare — the foundation that makes everything else work.
Here's what most people don't know: The carrier oil you choose matters just as much as the essential oils. Maybe more. Carrier oils aren't just "filler" — they're the primary therapeutic ingredient, delivering vitamins, fatty acids, and skin-nourishing compounds.
Let's explore what carrier oils are, how they differ from essential oils, and why the carrier oils in your skincare deserve your attention.
What Are Carrier Oils?
Carrier oils (also called base oils or fixed oils) are oils extracted from the fatty portions of plants — usually seeds, nuts, or kernels.
How They're Made:
Most quality carrier oils are cold-pressed:
- Plant material (seeds, nuts, kernels) is mechanically pressed
- Oil is extracted without heat or chemicals
- The oil is filtered to remove plant particles
- The result is pure, nutrient-rich oil
Why cold-pressed matters: Heat and chemical extraction can damage the beneficial compounds in the oil. Cold-pressing preserves vitamins, fatty acids, and other therapeutic properties.
Carrier Oils vs. Essential Oils
Carrier oils are fatty oils used at full strength — they nourish skin, deliver vitamins and fatty acids, and dilute essential oils. Think of them as the foundation and delivery system.
Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic compounds that must be diluted before skin application. They provide aromatherapy, therapeutic properties, and scent.
Together: Carrier oils + Essential oils = Complete botanical skincare. The carrier oil carries the essential oils into your skin while providing its own nourishing benefits.
Why Carrier Oils Matter
- They're the primary ingredient — making up 60-80% of most botanical formulas
- They deliver nutrients — vitamins A, C, E, K, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and minerals
- They determine texture — light oils (jojoba, rosehip) absorb quickly; heavy oils (coconut) are richer
- They're therapeutic — jojoba balances oil production, rosehip supports regeneration, arnica reduces inflammation
