Why SootheSkin Exists

Skin is remarkably capable on its own.

It regulates, protects and renews. It responds to the changing seasons, to stress, and to the rhythms of everyday life. Yet much of modern skincare is built around the idea that skin constantly needs to be corrected—that the right combination of active ingredients, acids or complicated routines will finally produce the results it has been missing.

SootheSkin begins from a different premise. Healthy skin doesn't always need more. Sometimes it simply needs to feel understood. And sometimes the most caring thing we can do is listen to it before we reach for something new.

That belief shaped every decision behind this formula. Rather than asking what more could be added, we asked a different question: What does skin truly need to feel supported? The intention was to create a balm that feels gentle, nourishing and uncomplicated—one that respects the skin's natural balance instead of asking it to work harder.

At Bovanique, every formula begins with two questions before anything else:

What is the purpose of this ingredient?

How will it improve the experience for the person using this balm?

SootheSkin has seven ingredients. Every one of them earned its place—not because it was expected or simply well known in botanical skincare, but because it contributes to an experience of skin that feels genuinely cared for.

When I developed SootheSkin, I was looking for something I could reach for without thinking twice — a formula gentle enough for everyday use, nourishing enough to make a real difference, and simple enough to trust completely.

The Formulation Philosophy

At Bovanique, we don’t formulate by trend. We formulate by function.

SootheSkin was designed around a single, clear intention: to create a botanical balm that nourishes and supports the skin without overwhelming it. The intention behind that design was a formula that felt genuinely rich without heaviness, carried a botanical aroma that was soft rather than assertive, and absorbed cleanly enough to be used on both face and body as part of a daily routine.

Seven ingredients. Each one chosen because it contributes to that experience in a specific, complementary way. Nothing is decorative. Nothing is filler.

The Design Goal

Gentle skincare is not about doing less. It is about understanding what skin needs — and respecting what it does not.

SootheSkin was designed for the skin that has been asked to cope with too much — dry air, cold weather, the cumulative effect of days that don’t slow down. The intention was a balm that felt immediately comforting on contact, that absorbed without leaving a heavy residue, and that could be used consistently without the skin ever needing to adjust or recover from it.

We weren’t trying to create something that performed dramatically. We were trying to create something that could be trusted completely.

Behind Each Ingredient

Calendula-Infused Oil (Calendula Officinalis)

The Intention
Calendula was selected with the intention of creating a botanical foundation that would make SootheSkin feel genuinely nourishing rather than simply moisturising — a distinction that matters when the goal is skin that feels supported rather than coated. The goal was for calendula to be present at the base of the formula, woven into the oil itself rather than added as a finishing note, so that its botanical character would be consistent and sustained throughout every application. To achieve that, we infuse calendula flowers directly into a carrier oil — a slower, more deliberate process than using a standardised extract, and one that draws the full botanical character of the plant into the formula’s foundation. The intention was that every jar of SootheSkin would carry the warmth and richness of the plant, not a processed approximation of it.

Calendula has been used in botanical skincare traditions for centuries, valued for its affinity with sensitive and reactive skin and its reputation as one of the gentlest botanicals available. In SootheSkin, it anchors the formula — providing the botanical warmth that everything else is built around.

Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)

The Intention
Jojoba was selected with the intention of giving SootheSkin a lightweight quality that would allow it to absorb cleanly and leave skin feeling balanced rather than heavy. The goal was an oil that would complement the richness of the cocoa butter and calendula infusion without competing with them — something that would help the formula feel nourishing without tipping into heaviness. Jojoba was chosen because its molecular structure is uniquely compatible with the skin’s own natural oils, which means it absorbs readily and leaves skin feeling genuinely balanced rather than simply coated.

Technically a liquid wax rather than an oil, jojoba is one of the most skin-compatible botanical ingredients available. In SootheSkin, it is the ingredient that keeps the formula feeling light and wearable — the counterbalance that makes the richness of the cocoa butter feel effortless rather than heavy.

Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter)

The Intention
Cocoa butter was selected with the intention of giving SootheSkin its characteristic richness — the velvety, deeply nourishing quality that makes the balm feel genuinely substantial on the skin. The goal was a butter that would melt slowly and evenly on contact, delivering its nourishing properties over time rather than all at once, and that would leave skin feeling genuinely softer rather than simply smoother. Cocoa butter was chosen because of its high concentration of fatty acids — particularly stearic and oleic acids — which are well-suited to supporting the skin’s natural barrier and leaving a lasting impression of softness.

In SootheSkin, cocoa butter plays the central structural role in the balm base — contributing the depth and richness that makes the formula feel like something worth reaching for, and working in balance with jojoba to ensure the finish remains comfortable rather than heavy.

Beeswax (Cera Alba)

The Intention
Beeswax was selected with the intention of giving SootheSkin the consistency of a true traditional balm — firm enough to hold its shape in the jar, soft enough to melt immediately on contact with warm skin. The goal was a texture that activates through touch and creates a breathable protective layer on the skin’s surface — one that helps lock in the moisture and botanical nourishment delivered by the calendula, jojoba and cocoa butter, without blocking the skin from breathing.

It is also why SootheSkin is not vegan — beeswax is a non-negotiable part of what makes a traditional balm a balm. We are transparent about this because we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re applying to your skin. Beeswax is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in recorded history, and in SootheSkin it serves the same purpose it has always served: creating a balm that protects as well as nourishes.

Chamomile Essential Oil (Matricaria Chamomilla)

The Intention
Chamomile was selected with the intention of contributing a soft, warm botanical note to the aroma of SootheSkin — one that would complement the gentle character of the formula and make the experience of using it feel genuinely calming. The goal was an aromatic ingredient that would add depth without assertiveness: chamomile’s slightly sweet, apple-like quality softens the floral notes of lavender and rounds the overall aroma into something more complete and more comforting. The intention was that the combined botanical aroma of SootheSkin would feel like a gentle environment rather than a fragrance — something that settles around you rather than announces itself.

Chamomile has been used in botanical traditions for centuries, valued for its gentle character and its long association with skin that needs a little extra care. In SootheSkin, it is the aromatic ingredient that makes the formula feel as gentle as it is.

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula Angustifolia)

The Intention
Lavender was selected with the intention of providing the floral heart of SootheSkin’s botanical aroma — a soft, familiar note that makes the experience of applying the balm feel like a genuine moment of care rather than simply a skincare step. The goal was a botanical aroma that was present without being dominant, that complemented the warmth of the calendula infusion and the softness of the chamomile, and that made the daily ritual of using SootheSkin something to look forward to.

Lavender has one of the longest histories of any botanical in skincare traditions, valued across cultures for its soft floral aroma and its affinity with skin that benefits from gentle, consistent care. In SootheSkin, it completes the aromatic experience — the ingredient that makes the formula feel finished and familiar.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

The Intention
Vitamin E was selected with the intention of protecting the integrity of the formula over time and conditioning the skin during use — so that SootheSkin remains as fresh and effective at the end of a jar as it was at the beginning. The goal was an antioxidant that would quietly do two jobs: extend the stability of the calendula infusion and the botanical oils in the formula, and contribute to the soft, nourished feeling that SootheSkin leaves on the skin.

It is not a headline ingredient. It is not there to impress. It is there because the calendula infusion at the heart of SootheSkin deserves to be protected — and because a formula built around gentleness should remain gentle from the first application to the last. The ingredients that no one notices are often the ones that make everything else last.

Why Gentle Formulation Matters

There is a tendency in skincare to equate complexity with effectiveness — to assume that a longer ingredient list, a more sophisticated delivery system, or a more aggressive approach will produce better results.

SootheSkin was developed from a different starting point.

The intention behind keeping this formula gentle was not to create something less effective. It was to create something that the skin could receive without resistance — a formula that supports the skin’s natural balance rather than disrupting it in the process of trying to improve it. Gentle routines encourage consistency. Consistent routines produce results. And results that come from supporting the skin rather than overwhelming it tend to last.

More ingredients do not necessarily create a better formula. Sometimes the most considered thing a formulator can do is decide what to leave out — to ask not just what each ingredient adds, but whether the formula is better without it. Every ingredient in SootheSkin is there because removing it would make the formula worse. Nothing was added to make the list look more impressive.

Simplicity, in this context, is not a limitation. It is a decision.

Why This Formula Isn’t Whipped

Whipped balms are popular. They feel light on first touch and have a texture that many people associate with modern, accessible skincare.

SootheSkin is not whipped, and that is a deliberate choice rooted in what we wanted the experience of using it to feel like.

The intention behind choosing a traditional balm consistency was to create a formula that delivers its botanical nourishment slowly and deliberately — that melts on contact with skin, that requires a moment of massage to absorb, and that in doing so creates a small, intentional pause in the day. For a balm designed to support skin that needs gentleness and consistency, that quality felt essential. A whipped formula would have been lighter and faster. A traditional balm is more present — and for SootheSkin, presence was the point.

We returned to the traditional balm because it aligned most closely with the experience we wanted SootheSkin to create: something that rewards the act of using it, that feels considered in the hand, and that makes the ritual of caring for your skin feel worth taking time over. Why Small Batch Matters

Every jar of SootheSkin is handcrafted in British Columbia in small batches — and that is a production decision made with the intention of preserving the quality of the calendula infusion at the heart of the formula.

The calendula infusion that anchors SootheSkin takes time. The flowers are infused slowly into the carrier oil to draw out their botanical character — a process that cannot be rushed without losing something essential. Small-batch production is what allows us to give that process the attention it requires, to ensure that the infusion is right before anything else is added, and that every jar reflects the same standard as the one before it.

In large-scale manufacturing, consistency is achieved through automation. In small-batch production, it is achieved through attention. The intention behind staying small is to ensure that the gentleness of SootheSkin — the quality that makes it feel genuinely supportive rather than simply moisturising — is present in every jar, from the first batch to the most recent one.

It also means that SootheSkin is made fresh. The calendula infusion is at its most botanically expressive. The cocoa butter is at its most effective. The balm you receive has not been sitting in a warehouse for months. That is what small-batch means to us — and it is why we will not scale beyond what we can make well.

Crafted With Purpose

I developed SootheSkin because I wanted a formula I could reach for without hesitation — something gentle enough to use every day, nourishing enough to make a genuine difference, and honest enough to trust completely. That is still what it is.

SootheSkin has seven ingredients. Each one is there because it contributes to a clearly defined experience: a botanical balm that nourishes without overwhelming, that carries a soft and comforting aroma, and that makes the daily act of caring for your skin feel like something your skin genuinely welcomes.
